What’s Your Calling?

When January arrives, I often recall my father who would summon the kids around the kitchen table with pencils and sheets of paper in place of forks and plates. It was time to write our resolutions for the year. I produced a pressurized, hurried list of “self improvements” that often was a list of things I wanted or wanted to happen.

It was good practice in theory, but nowadays, I like to put more emphasis and intention on effecting change. You can, too.

In 2024, let’s, for a portion of the day, put away the influence of technology that is (quite literally) dictating our every move and focus on these three words: Explore. Grow. Give Back.

Let’s make 2024 about being human. Steal some time for you, away from the algorithms that are overwhelming your attention and intentions.

EXPLORE

Try something old and make it new again or…make something new from something old. Stretch your curiosity and creativity. But, also, remember how important exploration can be when you are still, alone, and distraction-less.

GROW

Everyday, ask yourself, What is my calling?

It may take you all year to find the answer to this question, and that would be wonderful progress. Start by having cherished conversations with those around you: coworkers, mentors, clients, family, friends and new people who walk into your life this year.

Be present. Be genuine. You will be surprised.

GIVE BACK

Volunteer for a project with a colleague or go outside the walls of work and volunteer in the community. When we do things with no expectation of financial gain, the act of giving amplifies the quality and meaning of your time. As a society, we are doing this less and less. Find a reason to reach out and be helpful, just because it really does feel good.

Through these three actions, we’ll find purpose in 2024 which is a wonderful way to effect long term change.
