Innovation and Growth: ‘HELP’ is There

My favorite leaders-in-training are the ones who respect and listen. Throughout life, we have all been guided in some way or form. Have you ever noticed that a mentor has been selected for you or you have selected a mentor for yourself? Sometimes, unknowingly? Mentors are placed in our path to help us, and “HELP” becomes the perfect acronym for some very important leadership qualities that we should all embrace.

More than knowing Technology, one of the greatest tools for a leader is being able to listen and respect. Leadership is mentoring. Is willing to be mentored. Human to human side. Knowledge and wisdom being shared over time. Character is listening to people. Can’t do it by yourself.

H is for Humor. As we all know, change is inevitable. Think about how you react to it. Try to have a sense of humor for the peaks and the obstacles in your business and your personal life. Instead of saying, “no, no no!” ask, “why?” You might be surprised how revelatory a little humor can be.

E is for Esteem. You must hold esteem for the company you work for in addition to yourself. That esteem, or respect and admiration, embody a legacy of leadership and an openness to create.

L is for Listen. Listening is a state that I describe as fully awake. It’s such a critical quality in leaders and leaders-to-be. Always be listening. Talk less and listen. Suddenly your vision will become clearer to you.

P is for Praise. Never underestimate the power of praise. When something goes right, relish your team in praise. And when it doesn’t praise yourselves for finding out what didn’t work and the next best attempt. As I like to say, “failures are the foundation for innovative breakthroughs and success.”
