Thanks to the rapid shifts of technology, it seems that each generation in the workforce favors a different form of communication. What is the best way to bridge this over-abundance of communication tools?

To be sure, there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” tool when it comes to communication. We have all been quick to embrace emails and texting, however, quicker is not always better or more efficient.

Like any language, we need to know the process of translation and what works best in the moment and for the person with whom we are communicating. This includes getting to know the person (be they client, colleague and/or friend).

One of our greatest communication tools remains the phone call. It should never be overlooked. With a phone call, distractions fall away and you have someone's full attention. It's direct, voice-to-voice communication. It's instantaneous and genuine.

When a long string of emails, becomes unruly, pick up the phone.

Recipe for Good Communication:  Pick Up The Phone

1) Prepare your thoughts before you call.
2) Be polite and announce the reason for your call.
3) Ask if it's a good time to speak (and if it's not, ask when it would be).
4) To conclude, follow-up with an email that outlines the phone discussion
so facts, duties and intentions are clear -- and in writing.
